Do it with Passion or Don’t Do it All

When I first graduated from college - ready to hit the real world, I had no clue what I wanted to do.  I had no direction, I was lost. When I think back on it, knowing what I know now, I know it was because I didn’t have a clue as to what I was passionate about and I definitely didn’t have a clue about who I was.  2 weeks after graduation, I packed up my bags and moved to Winter Park, Colorado by myself because the only thing I knew for sure was that I loved to snowboard and I was seeking adventure.  I didn’t know it then but adventure is one my core values. It makes total sense that I took such a big leap. I was scared and exited all at the same time. When I arrived to my apartment, I remember putting my bags down and crying.  I didn’t leave my apartment for 3 days. If I didn’t have such a passion snowboarding, I don’t know if I would have done something I was so afraid to do- move out on my own.

Passion is a driver.  It’s the fuel that keeps you going. I have worked with a lot of young people who are in their first job and the ones that struggle the most are the ones that have no passion for what they do. I am convinced that drive and enthusiasm will get you farther than any skill or natural talent.  Passion and enthusiasm are contagious. The best leaders inspire, energize and influence other people. Do you think they could do this without being passionate about what they do and the reason they do it?

“A passion is something that is intensely meaningful and core to your identity”

Excerpt From Talk Like TED by Carmine Gallo

That is why it is so critical to know your identity before you can discover your purpose.  Understanding who you are and what you stand for is a key step in the process.

I am passionate about health and fitness and teaching people that it is not as hard as one thinks.  So I opened up 2 healthy fast causal restaurants that gave people a quick and easy option for food! My favorite memory was when a customer of mine told me that he now puts carrots on all his sandwiches and realized that eating vegetables was easy.

I am now a leadership coach because I am passionate about developing human potential in others. I long for everyone to experience freedom in their lives.  My work is meaningful and I enjoy every second of what I do. Even on the hardest days.  All because I discovered who I was, what I stood for and followed my passion.

You’ve got to follow your passion. You’ve got to figure out what it is you love—who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dreams.
